To address the specific needs of the turmeric processing industry, the ICAR – Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) in Kozhikode, Kerala, has developed a new light-colored turmeric variety. This new variety, named IISR Surya, features a light-colored rhizome suitable for the powdering industry. It was created after extensive research and is expected to greatly benefit farmers by enhancing the production of high-quality turmeric powder.

The masala and powdering industry often prefers lighter-colored turmeric varieties, such as Mydukur and Salem Local. Unfortunately, these local cultivars are available only in limited quantities. As a result, lighter-colored turmeric is frequently mixed with regular-colored turmeric to meet market demand. However, this blended turmeric powder lacks standardised characteristics, as its composition is entirely dependent on the mixing process, according to a press release.
